Celebrity publications began reporting last week that Slash, the one-time guitar hero from Guns N’ Roses, has petitioned a California family court in Los Angeles for divorce from his wife, Perla Ferrar.
According to People magazine the filing cites “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The magazine also notes that the musician, whose real name is Saul Hudson, “is seeking joint physical and legal custody” of the couple’s two children: boys aged 8 and 4. It also reports that the California divorce papers filed with the Los Angeles court state that the couple have been separated since mid-July. Their ninth wedding anniversary would be next month. Slash, now 45, has long credited Ferrar with calming him down and giving him a more mature outlook on life.
Separately, however, the celebrity-gossip website TMZ reports that “sources close to the couple tell TMZ the break-up is extremely acrimonious.” That could spell trouble as Slash and Ferrar head toward court, especially if another TMZ revelation is correct: that the couple have no prenuptial agreement.
Situations like this one spotlight the importance of careful planning when entering into, or seeking to dissolve, a marriage – particularly for high net-worth couples. They are also a reminder, albeit belatedly, of the importance of consulting with a Los Angeles or Orange County divorce lawyer before setting important legal and personal developments in motion. Prenups, for example, are not for everyone (though one usually imagines that a rock star would have insisted on having one drawn up). An experienced Orange County family law attorney can offer advice on the best way to proceed, as well as defending your rights and interests if a case should make it all the way to an Orange County divorce court.
