Substance Abuse

Like domestic violence, the abuse of alcohol or other substances that can alter mental cognition or otherwise affect the body can be found among persons in all socioecomonic strata of society. Substance abuse can be a primary or contributing factor to numerous negative effects on a family such as, for example, the commission of domestic violence, the loss of employment, the privilege to operate a motor vehicle, and loss of personal freedom (incarceration).

Substance abuse may have a bearing in many aspects of a family law proceeding, especially child custody and visitation matters, and with respect to obtaining domestic violence restraining orders.

Do not abuse alcohol or drugs if you don’t want your custodial time to be taken away.
